Coronary Angioplasty
The Coronary Angioplasty Service performs more angioplasties than any other unit in Australia and, in view of the complexity of the procedures undertaken, is recognised as an international Centre of Excellence. Last year the unit performed approximately 900 coronary angioplasties and, of these, 109 required stents and 323 the application of atherectomy devices such as ultrasound ablation. The unit also undertakes the implantation of pacemakers and defibrillators, inserting 230 pacemakers and 10 implantable defibrillators during the year.

Cardiothoracic Surgery
The Cardiothoracic Surgical Unit undertakes the full range of open heart procedures including coronary artery bypass grafts and valve replacements. Non-open heart procedures include lobectomies, lung biopsies, endoscopies, oesophogeal procedures and the repair of congenital defects. Last year, 789 open heart and 312 non-open heart procedures were performed. The Cardiac Transplant Unit was established in late 1994 and is currently performing heart transplants. The unit is supported by the Hospital's 24-bed Intensive Care Unit.

Stroke Treatment
The Hospital's 12-bed Stroke Unit was the first purpose-built stroke treatment facility in Australia when it opened in October 1992. Of the 574 stroke patients admitted to RPH last year, 260 were admitted to the Stroke Unit. Patients are assessed and treated by a multi-disciplinary team of neurologists, physicians, specialist nursing staff, physiotherapists, occupational therapists and speech pathologists. In a recent randomised trial, patients treated in the Stroke Unit were found to have significantly better outcomes than those who were not. 65% of patients treated in the unit were alive and non-disabled at six months, compared to 45% of patients treated elsewhere.
